The Deep Ones are one of the most iconic HP Lovecraft adversaries so I was delighted that Iain Lovecraft agreed to sculpt a set of them for the WaterSpire Kickstarter. The WaterSpire campaign contains buildings, canals, gondolas, statues, bridges, and scatter terrain inspired by Venice, together with some gorgeous miniatures for 3D printing.
Yesterday, this set of six Deep Ones from the campaign, 3D printed in resin arrived in the post. I don’t 3D print resin myself, as my wife objected strongly to the smells and nasty chemicals in the house, so I use a 3D printing service which are very reasonably priced and deliver great results.
Figures arrived in yesterday afternoons post. I need them for a game of In Her Majesty’s Name that I am playing with Mike tomorrow morning. Thank goodness for Speed Paint!!! After sticking the Deep Ones to temporary MDF painting bases, and priming them with Halfords White Auto Spray, I got to work. I started with the webbed skin under arms and along crest. These were picked out using Moonlake Coral which I had thinned 50/50 with Speed Paint medium, to give a more pastel finish.
So, I know that there are 50 colours in the new Speed Paint range, but the tones were not quiet what I wanted. I was looking for something like Caribbean Ocean, but a little bit more green, so I mixed Caribbean Ocean 50/50 with Ghoul Green to get the official Deep One Skin Tone that I was after.
The main boney bits of the weapons were painted with Citadel Contrast Nazdreg Yellow.
Aged Hide… A Yellowish Pink seemed a great choice for the inside of there mouths. I love it that Army Painter has a textual description of the paint tone on the bottle. Very handy for colour blind artists.
Teeth were painted Grim Black. It worked well, with a drop of Speedpaint medium to thin it, it ran nicely into the gaps between the teeth. Eyes were also painted Grim Black.
The leather wraps on the spears were painted with Army Painter Hardened Leather.
A light drybrush of white over the teeth finished the models off. They are not going to win any painting competitions, but they are ready for tomorrow’s game. Thanks Speedpaint!
I’ve based the miniatures on some thin clear plastic bases. I brought a 1″ diameter stamp from Amazon and press the bases out from old blister packs or Top Loader Deck Protectors.
All of the miniatures are from the WaterSpire Kickstarter, if you’ve not seen it yet, click here to take a look. Campaign ends on Friday 19th May 2023.
