Last week Friday I received our initial shop stock of the new Bolt Action Starter set from Warlord Games, plus a preview copy to paint up and run some demo games with. When I received it last Friday, I did (my first) unboxing video on YouTube. Over the last week, I have painted up and based the models that came in the set.
The ‘Field Manual’, the book that comes in the set shows recommended poses for assembling your miniatures so that you have the right weapons for the scenarios. You can of course assemble the miniatures exactly how you want them, but to show what you get, I have followed Warlord Games recommended mix of pieces.
The set contains twelve German Grenadiers. Two are assembled with SMG’s, two with Panzerfaust (although they count as rifles) and the rest carrying rifles.
I’ve painted them using a mixture of Vallejo and Army Painter Speed Paints and have based them on the bases supplied.
The American side has twelve US Rangers. Two of these are assembled with SMG, two as a Bazooka team and the rest with rifles.
The set also contains a rather nice ruined farmhouse. This is good and chunky and spread over two sprues. It does not come with any instructions as you can assemble it exactly as you like. I have put it together as two small buildings that could be used separately, or placed together as a larger ‘L’ shaped building. The building has also been painted with Army Painter Speed Paints.
This shows all of the other stuff you get in the set, which includes a paper, two sided playing surface that measures (30” x 22.4” approx.), 3 US Orders dice, 3 German Orders Dice, 8 x 6 sided dice, card rulers, halftrack and blast markers, a fabric dice bag and rulebook.
This is what it all looks like, together on the table. It’s a good starter set, to get people started in 28mm WW2 gaming as it literally has everything you need to get started, and the introductory rules are very simple and straightforward and introduced one concept at a time.
I took notes and photographs while I was painting the US Rangers and German Grenadiers, so I am planning to add painting guides to my hobby blog next week. It also strikes me that the contents of this set could also be used to play Buck Surdu’s Combat Patrol rules as well as Pulp Alley, so I will cover rules and resources for these over the next few weeks as well.
