This is my fourth article about gaming / collecting / painting / printing the range of 90mm Across Flats, modular terrain tiles from Hexhog Tabletops. I came across Hexhog Scenics originally via the lovely rolling, craggy landscape that Hexhog offer as a free sampler in there Campfire Confusion set. You can check out the original article about these pieces, which are completely free, by clicking here. This month I have put together a 3′ square gaming table based on there new release, Kingly Keeps.
The table contains lots of other 3D printed pieces that I have built up over the years from Iain Lovecraft, Printable Scenery and Infinite Dimensions.
The Keep covers seven hexes and is three stories high.
I have glued the second and third story pieces together for ease of use but have left the ground floor as separate pieces because this makes it easier to click them into terrain sub-frame.
I printed the keep using matt black PLA+ so I did not need to prime it first. If I had used a different colour, I’d have spray primed matt black using Halfords Auto Primer. The keep was mainly painted using household emulsion. I brought a 250ml tester pot of a mid grey and a light grey. I applied a heavy drybrush of mid grey using a 1″ make up brush.
Using a No 6 brush, I then used two different hobby acrylic greys to pick out individual stones to give a bit of variety.
Once everything had dries I gave everything a light drybrush, using the light grey household emulsion, applied with a make up brush.
Finally the model was varnished using Matt Lacquer from Halfords Auto range.
I decided to place the keep on a rocky cliff as I was a bit concerned by the ground floor doorway! The crags are from Hexhog Tabletops Precarious Peaks set. These are basically three high rocky out crops. Hexhog also do a two high rock set called Calamitous Crags and a one high set of rocks which is part of the Hinterland Hills Core Set.
If you look carefully you will see some examples from each of the three heights of hills. In fact the ramp taking the road up to the bridge across the chasm uses all three heights on one side to gradually raise the road up to the level of the keeps base.
The gaming board is not quiet finished. There are lots of holes for inserts that I need to print, paint & flock. The inserts are a great way to add some variety as there are different inserts available that are plain or have small features such as rocks or tree roots. It is also possable to mount model trees or other small scenic items on these insert disks.
