Dead Man’s Alley

Last Sunday (18th May) We were at the excellent Partizan wargames show at Newark showground running Pulp Alley participation / demo games.

The Pulp Alley demo team for the day included Mike Strong, Ben Quintiliani and Simon Taylor and myself. During the day we introduced many gamers to the versatility of the Pulp Alley games system.

Mike and I had decided that it would be great to have a demo set up that consisted of just the Dead Man’s Hand Starter Set from Great Escape Games. The Starter Set is incredible value, I think that I worked out that you save around £50 compared to buying the items individually. The set contains everything that you need to play Dead Man’s Hand, which of course is a great game in it’s own right, plus 3 buildings, boardwalks, scatter terrain and 10 male and five female gunfighters. We played on a fabric game mat and we did add a wooden bridge from Renedra and an extra frame of five plastic gunfighters as Mike built a force that included two five figure ‘Gangs’.

The Dead Man’s Hand Starter set has loads of useful pieces on it’s sprues. Each building sprue contains a dog. I mounted these on 25mm bases and used them as mobile ‘Perilous Areas’. The plot points were made by gluing some of the small plastic accessories on to 25mm round bases. I also made up a couple of unarmed townsfolk to be ‘witness’ type plot points.

Mike provided the Sheriff, his deputies and the gangs of armed townsfolk ‘posses’. I provided that Outlaw’s, ‘The Richmond Gang’. The Richmond Gang consisted of five figures, so just one of the sprues from the Gunfighter’s box, so at £7.50 it was a very cost effective league. After assembling and gluing to a base, I spray undercoated with Halfords Auto Primer, and painted all over with brown ink. When the ink wash had dried, white was dry-brushed over the miniature and the figures were painted using Army Painter Speedpaints.

Although I had only painted five miniatures, I have designed Pulp Alley Character cards so that they can be used in a variety of different ways as shown above. This gives a lot of variety and flexibility from fielding all five miniatures plus either a dog as a follower or a league perk right through to just fielding two very capable characters as a ‘Duo’ league.

Over the day, we had lots of different people joining in and many of them went on to purchase a copy of the rules. The big benefit of Pulp Alley is that it can be used to play any genre from Cavemen to Spacemen and gives a narrative driven game that is driven by the story of the plot and it’s plot points rather than just lining up and shooting at the opposition. If you’d like to join us for some Pulp Alley Old West adventure we will be taking our ‘Dead Man’s Alley’ set to EH Gaming in York for a day of demo / participation games on Saturday 14h June. We are also running an Old West themed Pulp Alley games day at Geek Retreat in Harrogate on Saturday 13th September. If you have a local games store that’s not stocking Pulp Alley, please let them know that we are supplying to shops anywhere in the world (apart from USA – as Pulp Alley supply US customers), and they can contact us at sally4thgames at gmail.com.

If you’d like to try out Pulp Alley in the Old West yourself, the character cards we used can be downloaded as a free pdf file by clicking here.
