Guards of Traitors Toll – Guards… a breed apart!

Guards of Traitors Toll is a solo / cooperative play skirmish miniatures game set in a fantasy city. Players take on the role of Guard Captains, maintaining law and order and making sure that all the proper taxes have been properly collected. The game includes some fantastic multi-part plastic miniatures from Wargames Atlantic. The kits have lots and lots of options, but all human, so as it is a fantasy city, I thought I’d have a go at converting a sprue of guards to other races.

After assembling the six guards with a good mix of polearm, ranged weapon and basic melee weapons, I drilled small holes in neck and back so as to get a really good bond gluing the metal animal heads and tails (from Sally 4th Critter Conversion Kits) with some super glue.

The miniatures were sprayed white (I use Halfords White Auto-primer), a brown ink wash is painted all over with a large brush. When the ink is completely dry, the miniatures are drybrushed matt white using a small make-up brush. The ink wash and drybrush add to the tonal depth of the contrast / speed paints.

This group of guards is wearing a yellow and red livery. I decided to use Games Workshop Citadel Contrast paints for the uniform (Flesh Tearers Red and Bad Moon Yellow).

Armour, weapons and anything else metal was painted using Army Painter Speed Paint Broadside Silver.

I like to use Army Painter Sand Golem for soft leather, so this was used for boots, gloves and leather coifs.

After testing lots of colours, I settled on Vallejo Wasteland Brown as my favourite wood tone so this was used for polearms and the crossbow body. Dark Wood was used for hard leather areas such as belts and pouches.

A few details such as buckles, cloak clasp and the breastplate detail were picked out in gold and various blacks and browns were used to paint the animals faces.

Miniatures were sprayed all over with Halfords Matt Lacquer and metal parts were overpainted with gloss varnish.

Finally, the figures were taken off there temporary painting bases and glued on to thin transparent bases. I like these as the figures then blend with what ever they are standing on and the thin bases do not have a thick edge that spoils the effect. I make the bases myself, punching out 25mm circles from Ultra-Pro Top Loader cards.
