Dungeon Saga Origins

Back in March I backed Mantic Games, Dungeon Saga Origin campaign. I had backed there original Dungeon Saga and had really enjoyed it. It’s my favourite dungeon crawl board game! At the weekend the new version arrived in the post. I was very, very impressed with the game and the components. In this blog I am going to showcase both painting the miniatures and playing the scenarios, but after 45 years of playing and collecting games, my first consideration is always, how am I going to store it the best, especially when I have the miniatures painted.

The timings really could not have been any better. Over the last month or so I had (at Sally 4th), been working on a new games room storage solution using the very versatile IKEA Kallax Cubes. The Sally 4th miniatures drawers are called K-Cube Storage. They consist of drawer side runners that can be glued or taped for flexibility on the inside of the Kallax Cube. Five drawer with clear 3mm Perspex fronts then slide into the runners. This system allows you to store a huge amount of miniatures and other games stuff in a very small space. Each drawer holds 180+ miniatures on 25mm bases. The advantage of the system, apart from holding thousands of miniatures in a small space is that you can see what’s in the drawers so do not need to label them, miniatures are protected from dust and miniatures, game boxes, books and other game components can all be housed together in the cube system.

For Dungeon Saga Origins, I had decided to store it in two drawers. One holds the miniatures and the other drawer holds the game boards, dice, cards and card components.

Here’s a drawer with all of the miniatures from the Kickstarter ‘Legendary’ edition, with plenty of space in case we are lucky enough to be treated to further supplements!

One of the reasons I choose this solution, is because, for me it will really, really speed up setting up and putting away a game. I mainly host games at home, so will be able to very quickly slide these two drawers out, carry them to the table and pick the miniatures out of the tray and place them on the board rather than having to look for them on multiple plastic trays and pop them out, and then when putting away find the right slot to put them in.

I am storing the cards in the card tray that came with the set. That seemed like a top way to keep them organised. There was plenty of room in the drawer to store all the tokens and small card pieces, grouped together in grip bags.

In case you are not familiar with the IKEA Kallax unit, (and to be honest, I wasn’t until about a month ago when a friend recommended them), on the left is the unit you can get from IKEA. They come in many configurations from one cube to 25 cubes. A top tip is to search on Facebook Marketplace, there always seem some available very cheep or even free!

On the right is a Kallax unit from my games room, kitted out with Sally 4th K-Cube drawers and packed full with around 5,000 miniatures!

I have just primed the miniatures for the first scenario, so hopefully will be able to add an article on painting them and playing by next week!
