Over the last few weeks, I have had the privilege to be able to test print and paint some of the beautiful models from my good friend, Iain Lovecraft’s new terrain and miniatures Kickstarter, Frost 2. This lovely plaster and timber building with a wood tiled roof prints in five parts which makes painting the interior detail easier as well as allowing for in game access. I printed my copy on my trusty Ender 5 FDM printer using eSun PLA+ with a 0.2mm layer height.
Before starting to paint I gave the model a good coat or primer / undercoat. I use Halfords Auto Sprays (they are a lot cheaper than hobby brands and give a really good finish). I start by spraying all of the parts with Halfords Matt Black. I do this twice, once from above, and when dry, once from below to make sure there is black paint beneath any overhangs. When the black primer is dry, I then spray using Halfords White Primer, from above at a 45 degree angle, lightly to leave some darker ‘in shadow’ areas. I do all spraying outside, wearing a respirator.
When the primer is dry, I washed over all the plaster areas with Game Workshop Citadel Colour Agrax Earthshade, slightly watered down, using a No 6 paintbrush,
Once the Agrax wash was completely dry, a heavy drybrush of DecoArt Light Mocha was applied over all of the plaster areas. I use make up brushes for drybrushing. They come in different sizes, are a lot cheaper than hobby brushes and do a better job.
All of the wooden beams were painted using Army Painter Speedpaint, Dark Wood. This is a fantastic contract paint that gives an automatic shadow and highlight effect,
The wooden roff tiles were painted using Army Painter Speedpaint Highlord Blue. This is a good deep blue. When it had dried I lightly drybrushed with Wargames Foundry Ice Blue and Ice Blue highlight using a large make up brush.
To finish off any areas of stone work were picked out using four different grey and stone tones before washing over with Army Painter Dark Tone to shadow and bring together. Lampposts were painted using Dark Angels Green Contrast paint, and the metal parts of windows and lamps were painted using a 50/50 mix of Army Painter Speedpaint Silver and Black.
Floorboards and window frames painted using Citadel Contrast Paint Snakebite Leather.
The buildings all have beautiful interior details. Miniatures are also designed by Iain Lovecraft from Harlots’s Den range, available from Sally 4th as plastic 28mm miniatures.
Building is one of the many terrain pieces and miniatures featured in Ian Lovecraft’s Frost 2 Kickstarter which is running until 30th June.
