Games Room

Much of my spare time this year has been taken up converting an old hayloft into a games room. The room is long and thin and not so high at the sides.

I have built two wargames tables, based on 2 x 4 IKEA Kallax Unit’s on wheels so they can be moved around and joined together for larger games.

I have used IKEA Kallax units for all storage. The room has two runs of units along either side wall, more under the games tables and against the far wall where I am in the process of moving all of my miniatures out of boxes and into figure drawers. The figure drawers are something which I have designed to fit five drawers into a standard IKEA Kallax Cube. They were designed to house my own collection, but as there has been a lot of interest in them. I have also made them available to purchase on the Sally 4th Website. Click here to take a look at the Kallax Drawer information page.

I have also used some of the IKEA Glass Shelves and Glass Doors for the four top cubes which I use to show of Sally 4th Miniatures and the figures that are recently painted or being used in current games. I also find the fabric boxes that IKEA make very handy for storing terrain. The ones in the end wall will eventually get moved to the Kallax units under the wargames tables as I build more drawers to store all my figures in the same place.

Each drawer can hold around 180 figures mounted on 25mm round bases. Obviously some drawers are holding vehicles or cavalry or smaller scale miniatures mounted on multiple figure bases. However a quick calculation shows that if I used all of the 24 cubes on the end wall for storing miniatures in Kallax drawers, they would store 21,600 miniatures!

Because the drawers are inside relatively enclosed ‘runners’ the drawer can be pulled out at least 75% and left out to put figures in and out.

There are also double height drawers that are handy for storing large miniatures of stands with flags.
