Next month my good friend Iain Lovecraft is going to be launching his latest campaign, Viking Saga. Iain his been busy for several months, working with a leading Viking museum in Sweden to ensure that what he designs is museum quality models of specific ‘Viking’ buildings and ships. I’ve been a keen Saga player for several years, with a 6 point Viking army for, Age of Vikings, so I was very excited to hear about this project as it gives me a great opportunity to upgrade my generic Dark Age huts and ‘Longships’. The models are 3D printed, although Sally 4th will produce the miniatures in metal after the campaign, and might even look at some of the smaller terrain pieces in resin. We have been invited to test print Viking Saga models before and during Iain’s Kickstarter campaign.
My plan is over the next couple of months to develop a Viking settlement from the first few buildings to a thriving bustling dark age port. To facilitate this I have built a few custom ‘Terra-Former’ tiles to add to my modular terrain collection. These include some rocky coastline edges that adhere to standard 12″ Terra-Former tiles and three beach tiles.
Before even the first men took there first steps in this land, the Gods had created a natural harbour. A shallow beach, free of obstacles or obstructions is flanked by two rocky promontories to form a natural harbour protected from the winds on three sides. The sea is alive with fish and moving inland the dense mixed forest is an abundant store of both building materials and game.
The Norsemen came and cleared the trees and fashioned there first dwellings. This first building is a simple but solid ridge tent like structure with wooden walls and a thatched roof held in place by wooden poles. Wooden peg fixings and ornate carvings distinguish the buildings front.
The second building is larger and more elaborate, featuring dormer windows, lean to storage on both sides and a lift of roof giving access to interior. All of Iain’s buildings have hinged doors with a simple sturdy hinge design consisting of a hole running through the door, floor and roof in which a thin rod can be inserted. You can use 1.75mm filament, but I prefer to use brass rod.
I’m not sure exactly what Iain is going to be including in the Viking Saga campaign. There will of course by miniatures, buildings and a number of ships. Exactly what additional models get designed is dependant on how many backers support the project, and what they request as Iain tends to solicit backers opinions to determine a consensus about what to add during the campaign. This is my wish list for the project!!
- Viking Great Hall – big enough to set a scenario inside.
- Viking Shipyard with a ship under construction
- Viking part constructed house
- Burnt out, ruined house
- Viking Shop / Market place with traders and towns folk
p.s. The miniatures in this blog are 28mm Victrix Vikings from my Saga army and are included in shots for scale reference!
